Easy crocheted slippers

Hiiii Everyone! Hope you are all having a wonderful year so far! We had a wonderful Christmas and a great New Years Eve and I was ready and full of energy for January, but then everything got spoiled by the polar vortex. It got so cold that uncollected dog poop froze on the sidewalk and you could play street soccer with it, if you wanted to. So, we layered up and wore ski gear as regular clothing and swished through the streets of Brooklyn in strange fashion.

If you know anything about us, Eastern Europeans - you know how much we love slippers (especially in the winter)! We live in them, give them to visitors and buy them as Christmas gifts on a yearly basis. Despite my concerted efforts to instill the slipper love into LoLo - they do not like them! I've bought countless pairs and there is always a problem with each and every one. One is too stiff, another one is not comfortable, another one is too girlie or boyish. On top of it, the comfortable once (I like - not LoLo) are expensive! At the end, I decided to crochet them a pair. If you know as little as making a chain and a single crochet you can make these slippers in an hour! This is how cute yours can turn out:

What you'll need:
Thick yarn
Large crochet needle
Thin yarn (the same color as the thick one for sewing)
Sewing needle
Anything else you may want to decorate the slippers with

First, make as many chains as long as the length of the foot + add about two chains so that the slippers are comfortable. Start a row of single crochet. When you've finished, make a chain and turn your work. Start another row of single crochet leaving out the first chain and inserting your hook to the second chain. Carry on crocheting until you've made a square. To know if've reached a square shape, simply fold your work half into a triangle - photo below. Once it's a regular square, take your needle and thin thread and gather one side of the slipper. Pull tight and carry on sewing to form the top of the slipper. Sew as far as you want the opening of the slipper. Try it on to guess accurately. When the toe part is done, take the other side of the folded-in-half slipper and sew at the heel.
That's it!!! It's this simple!

You may add many cute features to the slippers! Add a crocheted heart for Valentine's Day, a pom-pom, a ribbon bow, a felt face or simply crochet ears and embroider a cute face.

Stay warm LoLovies!

Meet Pickles!

Hi Everyone and welcome back to my crafting and real world. It's been a while since I posted I know, but with all the holidays and family ganging up on me wanting their peace and quiet at night, I really didn't get much chance to craft. That's living on 1000 sq feet New York City style for you.
Sewing machine deprived, I picked up my knitting needles. I've been admiring those large knitted dolls for quite sometime and had a book on my shelf called "Knitted Toy Tales" by Laura Long that's been staring at me. The cover has the cutest little doll that sold me the book immediately. The patterns are well written and easy to understand and follow, plus all the projects would make great gifts for little munchkins. (I am not the book's marketing rep or anything if you were wondering :)  ...

When the doll was half ready, I asked Lola what she wanted her to be called.  She thought about it long and hard and with daddy's help "Pickles" was born ... London, of course immediately responded by demanding his own doll, who will be called "Bagel" (as he informed us). I've been hiding Pickles from Lola until Bagel is born, so no photos of Lola styling P's hair or tearing off her dress just yet.

Did you notice the barrette in P's hair? She is getting ready for Valentine's Day! Tutorial and pattern for the hairpin coming up next, so stay tuned!

FREE doll patterns I would also love to make and you may too :)
  • Evie's Doll from dried Figs and Wooden Spools blog Her name is Eliza. Eliza and Pickles could easily be BFF's, though Pickles would be jealous of Eliza's cute little sweater. For a free pattern of Eliza email here: gwgrimm@gmail.com
  • An adorable Rag Doll from "Essential Knits" by Debbie Bliss. You can download the free PDF file pattern HERE
  • Sally the Eco Fairy designed by Jennie Eveleigh Lamond is another cutie to add to the girl's club. I am sure she'd be adorable even without wings if fairies are not your cup of fairy dust (I mean tea, of course :)
See you later alligator! I hope everyone's year started off on a right foot.

Knitted leg ruffles

If you've been following my blog you know that I love all sorts of leg warmers and have made a few for Lola to wear last winter.  I can not wait for the weather to get colder so she can wear them again. Finally, I decided to knit a pair for myself, but more "foot warmers" to cover the foot rather than the leg. I got the pattern from a magazine. It's an easy and quick knit, I promise! Plus these things are so useful if you have a pair of shoes you love, but find them too cold to wear. Just make a few of these and you'll never have to wear boots in your life again ... (well, maybe :)

P.S. I am updating this page two years later. I originally said to email me for the pattern, but I was able to track down the designer - her name is Jane Burns and her blog is http://knittingimage.wordpress.com/, please contact her for the pattern. She has many beautiful designs.

And another shot ...

Leg ruffles all dolled up in action ...

Valentine's Day Surprise

In case you didn't know, it will be Valentine's Day next Monday, February! The holiday of love, loved once; everything chocolate; long stem roses; prix fix overpriced restaurant menus; men walking around cluelessly at Victoria's Secret measuring up the chest size of the closest shop assistant against their girlfriend's/wife's/lover's; ugly bears hanging on to hearts at your local CVS and red hearts on the acrylic nails of the lady behind the window at your local post office. Even our local butcher has cupid shooting his arrow from behind the prosciutto hanging in the window, so unless you are walking around with your eyes and ears closed, you know it's V-day! What's more, there is a huge likelihood that your other half (including the most non-chalant kind) will want some sort of mention of the holiday.

Some defend against celebrating saying "but we love each other every day". Not the same! While getting some TLC any day of the year is heart-warming, pretending to celebrate Valentine's Day every day is like having a birthday cake after every meal. Every year, I try to do something cute for my Geoffrey (the lucky husband :).
This year the idea came to me when I saw Peptogirl's Valentine's Day printables ...
I love the cute sayings, I love surprises and this was just such an easy task ... All you need is a printer and a pair of scissors and a bit of cheesyness (the mac takes care of that) ... and download the printables, of course!

Good Morning!

Ready to go to work?
(I know I "said" you don't need to spend a penny on this,
but how could I resist buying this chocolate and stuffing it into G's jacket?)

Let's make dinner together! Something as sophisticated as Mac'n Cheese?!
Would you get the box of pasta, please?

What's for dessert?

Ok, just because it's Valentine's Day I won't stay up late crafting ... let's go to bed ;)

Or would you rather read a book instead?

So much fun, little effort and I am sure any partner will appreciate a little love note or chocolate!

I am not sure what LoLo is getting yet - maybe heart shaped pancakes for breakfast? If you have older children in your life, my friend Bird (a.k.a. Printable Fairy) designed the cutest Valentine Bingo that you can download directly from her website and her blog:

Want more hearts? I may just do one more post on the topic so come back!

Quick Knit: Leg warmers for toddlers

I love leg warmers! Ever since they went out of fashion (was it the 80's??) I've been wishing they came back and yes, they are - or maybe they are not completely, fashionably, "Sex and the City-ishly" in, but I just don't care, because they are so cute. I wear them, my little girl wears them, her friends wear them.

If you can knit a simple "knit and purl" you can make these in one night in front of the TV! (Now don't you watch anything scary; those needles can be dangerous and I am taking responsibility only for cuteness and design ok? :)  Speaking of needles, you can make these on round needles, but I am a queen of instant gratification and so I decided to make them both at the same time on straight needles.

What you'll need:
1 skein of cream color medium weight wool (size 4 US) I like using wool, or at least 80% wool, but be careful when washing. (Hot water is a NO NO!)
size 9 needles
a tiny bit of red wool and a crochet hook or an embroidery needle

CO (cast on) 36 (for a single leg) or 36x2 for two legs at the same time; you will need to divide the skein into two separate balls for the "both at the same time" option
This pattern is for the pair on the left with two hearts dangling from it ..

* 1 knit, 1 purl for 8 rows
* row 9: knit 2, purl 2
* row 10: purl 2, knit 2
* row 11: (the pattern swaps - where it was knit, it's now purl and vice versa) purl 2, knit 2
* row 12:   knit 2, purl 2
* row 13: purl 2, knit 2
* REPEAT PATTERN rows 14 - 44
* 1 knit, 1 purl for 8 rows
Cast OFF both leg warmers, saw or crochet together

For the ties measure 6 pieces of approximately 17 inches long wool pieces and weave them together. You may mix different colors of wool for a different look. On the red once, I added felt hearts to the end of the ties (just cut 4 pieces out of felt and glue together with fabric glue to the end of the ties), but you can also make pom-poms or knit hearts and felt them.

Make sure to thread the ties through the "knit" stitches (every second one) before you attach the hearts or pom-poms. Just to keep the fairness, I am going to make a pair for my little boy also with a soccer sock design - black with white stripes, I just hope daddy doesn't request a pair also :)))

Wear them to run around or lie around:

Now the exciting part: GIVEAWAY!!! Yes, I am giving away these red and white adorable leg warmers for your little Valentine! (Size 1 to 2.5/3 years old).
